Everything about this Cascara buckthorn (Rhamnus purshiana) box is subtle: the slight incurve of the sides, the low domed top, the just-loose-enough-for-one-hand fit. Even the coloration is subdued - the sapwood was spalted nearly all the way around, but the blue and pink shades give a pastel watercolor wash effect.
It was turned from a branch and the pith is visible just off-center at top and bottom. The small knot on the front curves the grain around it, hinting at dragonfly wings.
